9. Travelin' Soldier

the chicks travelin' soldier

"Travelin' Soldier" is a song written by Bruce Robison and originally recorded by him in 1996. The song gained wider recognition when it was covered by the Dixie Chicks for their 2002 album "Home."

The song tells the story of a soldier who meets a girl named Mary Alice on the bus on his way to the Vietnam War. They correspond through letters, and despite Mary Alice's protests, the soldier is eventually killed in action. The song is a poignant tribute to the sacrifices made by soldiers and their loved ones during times of war.

The Dixie Chicks' version of "Travelin' Soldier" was a commercial success, reaching number one on the Billboard Country chart and becoming one of the most popular songs of 2003.

However, the song also generated controversy for its anti-war message, and the Dixie Chicks faced backlash from some fans and radio stations. The controversy was amplified when lead singer Natalie Maines made critical comments about President George W. Bush during a 2003 concert in London. Despite the controversy, "Travelin' Soldier" remains a popular and beloved song, and is often cited as one of the Dixie Chicks' best works.

The track reached the top of the US country charts but failed to chart in Canada.
